As we have done in the past, we will be consolidating the November and December meetings this year to accommodate the fact that the last Wednesday of each month falls too close to a holiday. We hope you will be able to join us for this December 14th edition.

Our first presentation will be to look at a new development in the innovation ecosystem for health in the Kansas City area. This involves a dedicated area in the UMKC Health Sciences Building at 2464 Charlotte for research lab space that can be rented to small businesses. This will include some access to UMKC scientific facilities. Such an approach addresses multiple needs, including a research environment that small businesses often lack when pursuing grants like those through the Federal Government’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Research programs (SBIR/STTR).

Our presenter will be Jerry Wyckoff, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Division of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director, Research and Graduate Studies in UMKC’s School of Pharmacy.

Our second presentation will pick up the thread we have established for the Health Innovation Team in social determinants of health as we look at an innovative means to deliver personalized groceries, educational support, and essential data to help people successfully manage chronic health conditions. The solution addresses food equity and arises from a “food is medicine” mindset. It recently earned $100,000 in non-dilutive funding from Google as part of the tech giant’s initiative to support Black-led startups.

Emily Brown, funder of Free From Market , will discuss how she arrived at this solution and the impact she envisions in the marketplace.

###
Every month, we bring together a group of health care stakeholders to learn and share about technology and innovation projects happening in the region–and occasionally related topics from outside the Greater Kansas City area. Our stakeholders include hospitals and the health care system, city and state government officials, health IT firms and other corporate partners, startups working in health and wellness, and other civic organizations. The meetings are open, though not widely broadcast. They generally happen on the last Wednesday of the month, 8:30-10:00 am at Mid-America Regional Council (MARC).
We send out an email agenda and calendar invite to this stakeholder list, which we loosely call the Health Innovation Team. If you wish to be added to the email list, please send a note to jfitzpatrick@kcdigitaldrive.org.
